Complicated intra-abdominal infections (cIAI) are among the more challenging infections in the intensive care unit, not only because they are typically associated with more severe organ dysfunction() but also because the need for an intervention is more important than in other infections.() In recent years, a number of new challenges have been added, further complicating the decision-making process for these patients, who are often vulnerable. In this document, we will focus on the key elements in the management of these patients and review the latest evidence.
